Alex Bregman Signs with Cubs, and 4 Other Landing Spots in Slow Market
Prediction: Chicago Cubs
The Cubs were in on Bregman last winter, even hosting a virtual meeting with the infielder, but did not reach any sort of long-term agreement. Should Chicago wish to address third base now, it still has a need and the money available to make a competitive offer. What we don’t know is if the Cubs, who weren’t willing to go there a winter ago, will finally make the leap and commit themselves long term to a 31-year-old star perfectly in line with their timeline for winning.
Boston Red Sox
Boston is the cleanest fit, having seen Bregman's leadership up close despite a quad injury that cost him at least some games. After falling short on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber (separately) at the Winter Meetings, Boston needs to make sure Bregman is their No. 1 target for stabilizing an infield and a lineup. The familiarity he has with Fenway and the clubhouse only sweetens the pot.
Detroit Tigers
Detroit still has a hole at third base, but the match is more cloudy than it was 12 months ago. They had relations with Cole come to a standstill last offseason, and the Tigers payroll is already skyrocketing with Gleyber Torres and Jack Flaherty back in house. Since it’s a natural destination, on paper, that also could force each side to be cautious because of budget balance and previous deals.
Philadelphia Phillies
Philadelphia emerges as a dark horse should Bregman’s market continue to lag. The former could require trading Alec Bohm, and the front office has expressed some reservations about a long-term deal for players on the far side of 30. Still, Bregman’s bat, glove and edge would lift the Phillies’ 2026 ceiling.
Seattle Mariners
If the Mariners don’t re-sign Eugenio Suárez, Bregman becomes a sensible target to get them over the top after losing in seven games in 2025 ALCS. Seattle just needs high-end talent to get beyond this point, and Bregman delivers elite defense at third and veteran leadership for a current-win roster.
